SWOC Analysis for Self
SWOC is an
assessment tool emerging in corporate that can be adapted to individual use.
The acronym can be expanded to strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and
concerns. A student can benefit from this activity as it aids self-assessment,
goal-setting and strategizing for better future performance. The student
becomes aware of his/her strengths, identifies his/her weaknesses so that these
can be overcome and realizes the opportunities and concerns that propel or
constraint the particular individual.
To aid the analysis,
following activities were undertaken:
1. Students exposed to conventional
interview questions and asked to respond in limited time.
2. Students asked unconventional and
unexpected interview questions and asked to respond.
3. Student asked to define their role
models in form of one-liners.
4. Students asked to understand the
importance of USPs and unique qualities.
5. Students asked to read out skill sets
desirable in their discipline/branch
from a slip drawn from a jar marked “SKILLS”.
6. Students asked to read out coloured
slips from a jar marked “GOALS”. Actually, these Goals would be skills that
should be acquired by the time the students pass out of the university so that
they are industry –ready professionals/engineers.
7. Students are asked to draw a graphic
image of their future five years from the present time.
8. The students are asked to identify ny
‘obstacle’ and find a way to GROW where G is goal, R is current reality, O is obstacle as well as option that
helps you overcome it and W is the Way forward.
The SWOC
analysis designed here is not completely original but makes innovative use of
corporate exercises and ideal CV scripts/ interview scenarios to motivate the
students to introspect for understanding their own capabilities.
The students
responded with zest.
